The leather is nice and the heel (3 inch by the way) seems very stable. Not too big in the ankle which would have been the deal-breaker for me. I'd give them a 5, but I wear a size 12 narrow and these are just a little too small for me so a point off for inaccurate sizing. They're not 'off' enough for me to continue my saga of the perfect black boot any longer but I have to wear tights/nylon socks with them. I also have what I would think of as normal sized calves and they're just a teeny bit too big for me there. However I tend to wear them over pants so it's not a big deal. They're not super sexy but I didn't buy them for that and I've worn them all over Chicago in the snow without falling down.
